Sue Roper

New Zealand

I was raised in Waipara, North Canterbury. My creativity was encouraged, and I was surrounded with craft materials from an early age. I learnt to sew at age 11.

I discovered patchwork briefly as a young mum in the early 1990s. The passion for patchwork was reignited in the early 2000s and quickly progressed into an addiction and career path.

I am mostly self-taught, gleaning knowledge from a huge array of other quilters, both local and international. I’m not afraid to throw myself in the deep end, experimenting and taking risks. A ‘mistake’ is just a lesson.

I have developed a love of applique, embroidery, wool dyeing and collage. In 2010, I expanded my longarm quilting business and opened the Pink Possum Quilt shop on our family farm near Greymouth.

I have designed my own patterns in wool embroidery and fabric collage since 2012 and a Block of the Month, Quirky Birds. I have taught wool embroidery, patchwork and fabric collage in Australia, USA and multiple times throughout NZ, including Symposium 2022 and the Great New Zealand Quilt Show 2023.
